ROCHESTER CITY BALLET PRESENTS “LEGENDS OF DANCE”

Tickets on Sale Now at Nazareth Box Office for May 14-16 Performances

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Rochester City Ballet (RCB) is pleased to announce “Legends of Dance” as its spring 2010 performance. The revolutionary production will feature choreography by the New York City Ballet co-founder, George Balanchine; Joffrey Ballet co-founder, Gerald Arpino; contemporary master, Patrick Corbin; and RCB’s own artistic director, Jamey Leverett.

Performances will take place at the Nazareth Arts Center from May 14th -16th. Tickets cost $35 - $50 and are available at the Nazareth Arts Center Box Office, 585-389-2170, or online at www.boxoffice.naz.edu under “RCB/Serenade & Other Works.”

“We are thrilled to bring this performance to our patrons,” said Kathy Ertsgaard, RCB executive director. “A show of this caliber — combining legendary pieces with brand new work — is a perfect illustration of the amazing growth our company has seen.”

The show will feature Balanchine’s classic, “Serenade.” The piece features dancers in blue costumes against a blue backdrop and is performed to Tchaikovsky’s music by the same name. The dance is the first original ballet Balanchine created in America and is one of the signature works in New York City Ballet’s repertory.

Arpino’s “Valentine” is also included in the performance. This piece takes a quirky and humorous look at the battle of the sexes using a boxing arena as the setting. This contemporary pas de deux features a third player — a double bassist on-stage with the dancers. In this production James VanDemark will fill the role. VanDemark is a highly acclaimed musician, having performed all over the world. He currently serves as a professor of double bass and co-chair of the strings, harp, and guitar department at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester.

Leverett’s piece, entitled “How to Break a Heart,” pairs poetry from Emilie Autumn (including the title poem) with Bach’s “Sonata No. 1.” The ensemble dance cultivates a layered effect, paired with musically inspired visual patterns. This performance marks the first time Leverett has incorporated spoken word into her choreography for the company.

Another brand new original work, “Shady III” by Corbin, is also making its world premiere in “Legends of Dance.” The piece is performed to Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 5 (Adagietto)” and features street-clothes style costumes. Corbin was inspired to choreograph the piece while listening to the music and seeing one of his company members startle another dancer.
