FORMER ROCHESTER CITY BALLET DANCER FEATURED IN
OSCAR NOMINATED DOCUMENTARY
- Rehearsing a Dream Will be Shown at The Little Theater Beginning This Friday -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. –Phillip Seymour Hoffman isn’t Rochester’s only link to the Oscars. The Academy Award nominated short documentary, Rehearsing a Dream, features performances by former Rochester City Ballet (RCB) dancer Kelsey Buchanan. The documentary, along with all other nominated short documentaries, will open at The Little Theater on Friday, March 2.

Rehearsing a Dream follows a group of talented 17-year-old performing and visual artists who get the chance to spend a week at the 2006 National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts’ (NFAA) ARTS Week in Miami, Fla. The students shared their passions and work with each other and with leading figures from the world of performing arts such as Vanessa Williams, Mikhail Baryshnikov and conductor, composer and pianist Michael Tilson Thomas. Karen Goodman and Kirk Simon directed the 40-minute film.

Currently, Buchanan is a full-time student at Marymount Manhattan College as well as is an apprentice dancer with Complexions Contemporary Ballet in New York City. She attended ARTS Week in 2006 and was featured onscreen during the 2007 Oscar telecast as the short documentary nominees were called. The video clip featured Buchanan performing “Unbound,” a contemporary solo choreographed by RCB artistic director Jamey Leverett.

“We’re so excited for Kelsey - to see her on the Oscars was an absolute thrill!” said RCB artistic director Jamey Leverett. “She is extremely talented and we are so proud that we’re able to bring her home to perform with the Rochester City Ballet as a guest artist. This past season she was able to join us for our annual production of The Nutcracker and we look forward to similar opportunities in the future.”

The Little Theatre will show Rehearsing a Dream, Two Hands, Recycled Life and 2007 Oscar-winning The Blood of Yingzhou District from Friday, March 2 through March 8 at 6:30 and 9:15 p.m. each night, with additional shows on Saturday and Sunday at 12:45 and 3:30 p.m. For more information visit www.the-little.com.

Kelsey Buchanan danced with the Rochester City Ballet from 2001 to 2006. Her solo roles with RCB include Italian Ice, Magical Doll and Merlitons in The Nutcracker. She was a featured soloist in Jamey Leverett's Gershwin in the Park and appeared in Leverett's Respect, Push and Pull, and Pedestal. She has also appeared in Firebird, Don Quixote and danced the role of Spring Fairy in Cinderella.

In the summer of 2005, Buchanan attended the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and was a featured soloist in their opening gala, dancing a pas de deux in Margo Sappington's world premiere of Foxtrot for Orchestra. She received a full scholarship to the Orlando Ballet summer intensive in 2005 and attended the Kaatsbaan International Dance Center Extreme Ballet summer intensive in 2004 and the Paul Taylor Dance Company Winter Intensive, 2004-2005, in New York City. Buchanan spent the spring of 2006 performing with the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble. She is currently an apprentice dancer with the Complexions Contemporary Ballet and will join the company when they travel to Poland to perform in May of 2007.
